The Eastlake Community

The Eastlake Community of Oakville extends from Morrison Creek on the west to Winston Churchill Boulevard on the east, and from Lake Ontario to the industrial area south of the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW).  The Community encompasses the neighbourhoods traditionally known as Southeast Oakville, Morrison and Ford.

The Eastlake Community is a well-established, primarily low density residential area, and is suburban in character.  The community consists of single detached homes for the most part, that occupy large lots.  This area of Oakville is widely regarded as one of the most desirable areas of the GTA.

The Eastlake Community contains four public elementary schools, one separate elementary school, one public secondary school and one private school.

Other institutional uses located within the community include numerous churches, day care centres, and a community recreation centre.

The Eastlake Community has a variety of amenities located within its boundaries:

It has four waterfront parks of various sizes along the Lake Ontario shoreline, the largest being Gairloch Gardens.  It is the policy of the Town of Oakville to develop a linear waterfront park system along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Gairloch Gardens is classified as a Special Park, as it is a unique site of historical and cultural significance.  The park contains beautiful historic gardens located on the Lake Ontario waterfront and a historically significant residence that has been converted to a public art gallery.  The park is constantly used as a site for wedding photographs.

Joshua Creek, located on the east side of the Eastlake Community, contains public parkland, recreational facilities, natural environment areas, and a trail system for walking and cycling.

The Eastlake Community had a population of 11,097 persons according to the 2001 census.  The community has reached and exceeded the ultimate population projection of 10,500 personas as designated in the Town of Oakville Official Plan.

According to the 2001 census, the population in the Eastlake Community in the 0-19 age group formed 29.7% of the total population.  This was close to the overall Oakville average of 28.4%.  The 65+ age group has a population of 11.3%, which is also close to the overall Oakville total of 10.9%.

Housing

The Eastlake Community consists of low density residential uses for the most part, occupying large lots.  New residential development in Eastlake will occur through infill and through the redevelopment of some of the larger estate holdings along the Lake Ontario shoreline.

Proposed development and redevelopment shall be carried out at a scale and with a character in sympathy with the surrounding residential neighbourhoods.
