The Glen Abbey Community

The Glen Abbey Community in the Town of Oakville is bounded by the Burlington-Oakville Mini-Belt of the Parkway Belt West Plan on the west, Upper Middle Road on the north, the Sixteen Mile Creek on the east, and the Queen Elizabeth Way West Industrial District on the south.

 

The Glen Abbey Community is primarily residential in character, There is a mix of housing ranging from single family detached residences on various sizes of lots to medium density and high density multiple attached and apartment housing forms.  The majority of the residential development is low density in character.

 

This community has a unique pattern of open space that consists of a network of parks, ravine lands, woodlots, and schools that interconnect from one neighbourhood to the next.

 

This community contains three public elementary schools, two separate elementary schools, and one separate secondary school.

 

The Glen Abbey Community is anticipated to have a maximum population of 23,000 persons, with the 2001 census reflecting a current population of 20,243.

 

The community has a high proportion of younger persons and a low proportion of older persons over the age of 65.  From the 2001 census data the population breakdown shows 34.6% of the population are between 0-19 years of age, as compared to the overall Oakville total of 28.4%.

 

Only 5.4% of the population is over 65 years of age as compared to the overall Oakville total of 10.9%

 

Commercial Amenities

Town Centre located at the southwest corner of Dorval Drive and North Service Road is the principal Community Shopping area serving primarily the residential population within the Glen Abbey Community and the adjacent industrial areas.  Town Centre II located at the southeast corner of Dorval Drive and North Service Road is designated as arterial commercial and also provides the community with a wide range of shopping facilities.

 

A second Community Shopping Area, called The Abbey Plaza is located at the southeast corner of Third Line and Upper Middle Road.  Four neighbourhood Commercial Centres are located throughout the Glen Abbey Community which provide the day to day convenience needs of the neighbourhood.

Other Amenities

The Glen Abbey Community has a variety of amenities located within its boundaries.  Some of the more notable amenities are as follows:

 

Glen Abbey Golf Course   The Glen Abbey Golf Course is recognized as one of the more challenging courses to play in Canada.  It was also the site for the 2004 Bell Canadian Open.  The Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum is located at the Glen Abbey Golf Course.
Sixteen Mile Creek   The Sixteen Mile Creek forms the east boundary of the Glen Abbey Community.  The area contains public parkland connecting walkway/trail systems, and is designated as an environmental protection area.

 

Parkland and Facilities   

 

The Glen Abbey Community contains five parkettes (generally less than 1 hectare in size), seven Neighbourhood Parks, one Community Park, and eleven Natural Environment Parks.

 

The Glen Abbey Recreation Centre has tennis courts, basketball courts, a baseball field, an arena, a fitness area, an indoor swimming pool and a library for community use.
